The U.S. government shared critical information with the ISP community following revelations that Chinese-backed hackers were engaged in an ongoing program of cyberespionage against U.S. commercial interests, signaling a new level of cooperation between the public and private sectors, Danny Yadron and Siobhan Gorman write. According to government officials, in February, as controversy swirled around alleged Chinese hacking efforts, the Department of Homeland Security offered service providers Internet addresses it believed were linked to the hacking ring, including that of a major international oil company whose networks may have been breached.
