Detroit's filing for bankruptcy protection will face additional scrutiny this week as a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge considers whether the filing runs afoul of Michigan's constitutional protections for public employees' pensions. The Police and Fire Retirement System and the General Retirement System, which represent about 20,000 retirees, are seeking to force the withdrawal of the bankruptcy filing, which officials have said is likely to result in a restructuring of the city's pension obligations.
