The Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools in North Carolina and the United Way of Forsyth County have teamed up to serve the needs of area students through two schools that incorporate horticulture into the curriculum. "The horticultural-therapy program's primary focus is on the students," said JoAnn Yates, a registered horticultural therapist and staff member at the Children's Center. "With nature as a co-teacher the horticultural therapist uses hands-on activities to stimulate and nurture sensory, motor, cognitive and communication skills," she said.
