University of Kansas geography professor Bill Woods has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in Sweden for his research on a fertile kind of soil in the Amazon rainforest. Woods has spent a long time studying soil, and his work has contributed to the current understanding of the Amazon as an area that may have once contained as many as 20 million people. Woods has received the degree, but his efforts to travel to Sweden for a ceremony have thus far been thwarted by health problems.
