Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, a Republican candidate for governor, said last week that he stands by his characterization of homosexuality as "against nature" and "harmful to society." During a debate, Cuccinelli's Democratic opponent, Terry McAuliffe, said the comments could hurt Virginia's ability to attract businesses. "[W]e've got to make Virginia an open and welcoming state," said McAuliffe, adding that he supports allowing same-sex couples to marry. Cuccinelli is also seeking to reinstate Virginia's ban on sodomy.
