Middle schools can offer programs, such as a six-week suspension intervention to teach students to make better decisions, to help students navigate the difficult transition from childhood to adolescence, according to California middle-school counselor Sandra Ortega-Ramos. In this interview, Ortega-Ramos said students in middle school are at an important age when they "need support, empowerment, boundaries and expectations, constructive use of time, commitment to learning, positive values, social competencies and positive identity."
