New York City's Staten Island has a landfill that converts landfill gas into natural gas suitable for sending through pipelines. It's one of 30 U.S. sites capable of the high-quality conversion. "It could be food waste, it could be paper waste, it could be rags. We're talking about solid waste that the general public used to dump years ago," says Ted Nabavi of the city's Department of Sanitation.
