Climate change this century could lead to 20 more hurricanes and tropical storms annually, according to a study authored by Kerry Emanuel of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Our study suggests that the largest increases might occur in the western North Pacific region, but with noticeable increases in the South Indian Ocean and in the North Atlantic region," he said. Other scientists said that caution is necessary regarding hurricanes, but more research is needed on the effects of climate change.
