Incoming fifth-graders to the Washington Gifted School in Peoria, Ill., spent a week getting to know their new school and doing math and language arts lessons tied to a schoolwide project chosen by the students. "Going from elementary school to middle school is already a big transition, and these students are also switching into a very rigorous gifted program," said Shameika Sykes-Patterson, coordinator of the school's Jump Start program. "We're hoping it helps them get used to the environment," she said.
