A study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal compared blood-based resuscitation and traditional resuscitation and found that immediately transfusing blood to trauma patients was tied to an increased risk of blood loss and respiratory complications. Researchers found no significant difference in the mortality rates for the two groups. The results are contrary to earlier research that formed the basis of trauma centers' protocol that many bleeding trauma patients cannot clot properly and therefore should be given a transfusion right away.
