Even as the number of students qualifying for free and reduced-price meals rises nationwide, data show that just a small percentage are taking advantage of free summer-meal programs. In Fort Wayne, Ind., officials say that fewer than 1 in 8 of the 510,000 who received such meals during the past school year visit the district's summer-meal sites. Those who do are served healthy options, such as eggs, raisins, pea pods and cucumber slices.
