Rather than debating the reality of climate change, officials in the Florida Keys are taking steps to shield their infrastructure from sea levels that could rise. The ground floor of a new fire station on Stock Island is 10.5 feet above ground level -- a foot and a half higher than federal regulations call for. Officials have plans to install additional drainage and also deal with making roads and bridges more sustainable in the event of a rising sea.
