Thousands of silkworms working with guidance from a CAD-designed aluminum framework and starter threads strung by a robot have produced a human-sized dome. Media Lab professor Neri Oxman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology likens the project to the zero-waste process in 3D printing but with key advantages. "In more than one way, a silkworm is a sophisticated multi-material, multi-axis 3D printer," Oxman said.
