An animal study in Diabetes revealed 36% of rats with diabetes died of cardiac arrhythmia following a severe hypoglycemic event, compared with 21% of rats without the disease. However, in a separate experiment, researchers found the rats' death risk could be reduced from 86% to 33% by infusing glucose into the third ventricle of the brain during severe hypoglycemia.
