University of Missouri nurse researchers are testing how motion sensors on walls or under mattresses can alert nurses and other caregivers that an elderly patient may be more likely to fall or require a trip to the doctor or hospital.
Nursing professor Marilyn Rantz said one study found that a year after the motion sensors were installed, residents had better function compared with an unmonitored group, possibly because nurses spotted problems and intervened earlier.
