Sales of prepared food at retail outlets such as supermarkets and drugstores for consumption at home will increase 10% by 2022, taking business away from restaurants, according to a survey by The NPD Group. The survey says shoppers ages 18 to 34 are most likely to purchase prepared food from a retailer for an afternoon or evening snack, while those 35 and older are more likely to purchase prepared food for dinner at home.
