The city animal shelter in San Bernardino, Calif., is dealing with an outbreak of panleukopenia that has led to the quarantine of some cats. The intestinal virus is harmless to humans but highly contagious in domestic cats. Symptoms typically appear two to 10 days after exposure, and with treatment, the mortality rate drops from 90% to about 20%, said veterinarian Leonard Sigdestad.
