In an effort to solve the mystery of how tornadoes develop, Panasonic Avionics is planting sensors in some 400 aircraft making regional flights. These planes, unlike those of major airlines, frequently cross through the troposphere where twisters develop. Many more planes are needed, though, for effective atmospheric modeling, as well as a good deal more processing power to handle the massive amounts of data, according to this article.
