A study published in the Journal of Biophotonics suggests in vivo Raman spectroscopy is useful for detecting malignant and precancerous oral lesions. Researchers used the tool to assess normal oral mucosa as well as lesions caused by squamous cell carcinoma, oral submucous fibrosis or leukoplakia. Findings revealed accuracy of 82% to 89% for classifying tissue type, compared with histology.
