Researchers are studying a newly discovered species of hero shrew, hoping to understand the creature's unusually shaped backbone. "The hero shrew has the most bizarre mammalian backbone in the world," said lead study author William Stanley of the Field Museum in Chicago. The ratlike animal's backbone, which has 10 to 11 interlocking lumbar vertebrae, is known to be extraordinarily strong.
