The Senate Appropriations Committee last week backed a 7.9% increase in funding for the National Science Foundation. If Congress approves the budget, the boost would push the NSF's 2014 budget to $7.4 billion. The panel's allocation falls about $200 million short of what President Barack Obama sought, but was more generous than what a House panel approved earlier in the week.
