Approximately 5,000 patients per year are denied medical air transport because they are too heavy to lift or can't fit in the helicopter. "We can get to a scene and find that the patient is too heavy to be able to go," said Craig Yale of Air Methods, an air medical transport company. Some transport providers are purchasing larger helicopters to accommodate obese patients, while others have to resort to ground transportation.
