St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis is testing a new hand-washing system, even though the hospital already had a 90% compliance rate with its current program. Nurses wear badges that detect evaporating alcohol from freshly sanitized hands, and a green light on the badge indicates to patients that the nurse's hands are clean. The badges are placed in a docking station after each shift to track compliance, which has risen to 97% and 99% in the two testing units.
