Steel manufacturing is being remade with new technologies that promote efficiency, a trend illustrated by U.S. Steel's $400 million plant expansion in Leipsic, Ohio. Automakers in particular are drawn to these upgraded plants and new technologies. As these traditional capital-intensive steel plants are modernized and become more efficient, they tend to hire a larger percentage of white-collar workers, according to MAPI economist Cliff Waldman.
