A study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research that involved 30 patients who participated in the Portland Veterans Medical Center's My HealtheVet Pilot showed that allowing patients to access their EHRs could enhance patient involvement in their care. Researchers revealed that accessing EHRs improved patients' understanding of their health conditions as well as enhanced their communication with their doctors. "Viewing their records appears to empower patients and enhance their contributions to care, calling into question common provider concerns about the effect of full record access on patient well-being," wrote the authors.
