Patients with bipolar disorder face an increased risk of all-cause mortality, and on average, die nearly a decade earlier than the general population, according to a study in JAMA Psychiatry. Specifically, mortality risk was higher for heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, diabetes, flu and pneumonia. Researchers also found patients with the disorder are more likely to commit suicide than those who do not have the condition.
