Hyponatremia may be associated with increased risk of death and more subtle changes, including decreased physical and cognitive performance. The authors analyzed the prevalence of and risk factors for thiazide-associated hyponatremia in the adult general population. They found that thiazide use was associated with a fivefold increased risk of mild hyponatremia and eightfold increased risk of moderate and severe hyponatremia; younger age and lower body mass index were associated with hyponatremia. Accordingly, monitoring serum sodium levels in thiazide-treated patients is recommended.
