Thresher sharks were observed using their tails to create a shockwave in the water off the coast of the Philippines, a predatory technique that stuns or kills several smaller fish on contact. This hunting strategy has been observed in dolphins and killer whales, but not sharks. A study found that more than one-third of the shark's attempts using the slap method were successful -- better than when it attempted a face-first hunting approach.
