Seventeen US retailers including Wal-Mart, Gap, Target, Kohl's and Macy's unveiled a plan Wednesday that commits $42 million to improve safety at the Bangladesh factories that make the clothing they sell and $100 million for loans to help factory owners correct safety problems. The agreement, dubbed the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety, calls on retailers to inspect their Bangladesh factories within 12 months and develop plans to fix any substantial safety problems.
