Shift Communications co-founder Todd Defren chose to restructure his company using an employee stock ownership plan -- essentially giving part of the company to his workers. That rewarded the people who helped build the firm while renewing their loyalty and commitment. "In an agency environment, it tends to be, 'What else can you do for us?' Now it's more, 'What else can we do for the business?' " Defren says.
