New faculty members should look for ways to integrate themselves into their department and not take things personally, writes Pamela Oliver, a professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Keep regular office hours and ask colleagues out to lunch to get to know them better, she advises in this blog post. Also, among other suggestions, learn the culture of the institution and what kind of work is needed to earn tenure.
