The volume of freight carloads transported by U.S. railroads rose 2.5% in the week ending July 27 year-on-year, and intermodal activity climbed 2.4%, according to the Association of American Railroads. Shipments of petroleum and petroleum products surged 23.2%, the highest gainer among six of the 10 carload categories. The industry's overall traffic in the U.S. increased 2.5% during the latest week, AAR noted.
