Smartphone applications using Google's Android operating system are expected to reach $6.8 billion this year, nearly doubling 2012's total, according to ABI Research. "Apple's iOS still leads all the other mobile operating systems' revenues by a significant margin; however, the greater number of Android smartphones in use is clawing back Apple's lead in this market," says Josh Flood, ABI senior analyst. Shipments of Android devices are predicted to outpace iOS three to one as the app economy should reach $25 billion globally, about two-thirds coming from smartphones.
