The Panama Canal Authority, or ACP, says the $5.2 billion widening of the Panama Canal is more than 60% complete. The first four of 16 gates for the canal's third set of locks marked a construction milestone. Locks are nearly 50% finished; concrete work is two-thirds done; and water-saving basins are about 40% complete. The project was set back by six months after ACP rejected concrete mixes for the lock structure in 2011 because they were not up to the 100-year standard indicated in the contract.
