President Barack Obama's administration plans to implement new hiring rules for federal contractors, requiring them to hire 7% of their work force from veterans and disabled applicants. The unemployment rate of veterans nationwide in 2012 was 7%, better than the overall unemployment rate of 8.5% in December 2012. This data is one reason that AGC is against the new hiring proposal. Another reason is the cost factor. AGC says financial and administrative requirements would cost $11,33 per office site -- 25 times more than the estimate provided by the Department of Labor estimate. "So far, all available federal data makes it clear that there is simply no need for these new regulations," Stephen Sandherr, AGC’s chief executive officer.
