Increased levels of antiangiogenic factors, including soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 and soluble endoglin, and lower levels of placental growth factor, an angiogenic factor, during the second trimester of pregnancy were associated with a higher preeclampsia risk in women with type 1 diabetes, a study found. Researchers reported in the journal Diabetes Care that while established clinical risk factors for preeclampsia are reliable, the study results "also suggest that angiogenic factors provide added clinical value when predicting risk."
