Data on 521 HIV-positive patients aged 12 and older who were infected perinatally showed that 84% were on antiretroviral treatment in 2010, up from 67.4% in 2002. This increase in antiretroviral use was associated with declines in both viremia and advanced immunosuppression rates, researchers said. However, the study, published in the Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, showed that older HIV patients, blacks and Hispanics were at higher risk of viremia.
