Baidu is advancing the idea of a "light" (or "lite") application -- an app that can be accessed online by mobile users without having to download it first -- in lieu of app stores, even though it owns one, China's 91 Wireless Websoft. "We are pushing the development of China's Internet ecosystem. We hope by promoting 'lite' apps to help developers integrate mobile and cloud systems," Baidu's Li Mingyuan says. Baidu hopes the end-run around app stores will aid app discovery.
