Financial institutions saw a record $42.2 billion in profit in the second quarter, a 23% increase compared with Q2 of 2012, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. says. Chairman Martin Gruenberg says asset quality and loan balances continue to improve, but he warns that banks have nearly exhausted their ability to boost earnings by cutting loan-loss provisions.
