A non-invasive brain-machine interface may one day enable paralyzed patients to walk by using their thoughts to direct a robotic exoskeleton that moves their body. The University of Houston's Jose Luis Contreras-Vidal, professor of electrical and computer engineering, is working on the device, which would interpret brain waves to control either robotic legs or below-elbow prosthetics. The work has received funding from the Cullen Foundation and The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research.
