Fourth-grade students in David Reese Elementary School in Elk Grove, Calif., are learning to verbalize how they reached the answers to their math problems. The approach is part of the school's shift to the Common Core State Standards. "As a student articulates his or her reasoning, they kind of self correct errors in reasoning that previously might have led to miscalculations," said Anne Zeman, director of curriculum and professional learning for the school district.
