Although fabricated children's illnesses reported by caregivers are relatively rare, about 6% to 9% of children exposed to this type of maltreatment have died and about the same rate suffered a long-term disability or permanent injury, according to a report published in the journal Pediatrics. Health care providers should be alert to caregiver-contrived illnesses, especially when the child's conditions are unexplained and result in several medical procedures, researchers said.
