The use of a three-dimensional cartilage printer in operating rooms is still years away from reality, but it is closer at hand than the creation of engineered organs, Dr. Darryl D'Lima of Scripps Clinic in San Diego says. "Printing a whole heart or a whole bladder is glamorous and exciting. But cartilage might be the low-hanging fruit to get 3D printing into the clinic," D'Lima said.
