Chemical producers are weighing the benefits of using bio-based materials versus petrochemicals and are balancing their portfolios to cater to different market preferences. "Customers in the electronic and automotive industries will not pay a premium for biobased products unless there is a technical advantage," said Matthias Scheibitz, a product development officer at BASF's automotive unit. DSM, meanwhile, is looking "to have technology solutions in time to be able to respond to [expected] customer demand whilst using DSM's established competencies in biotechnology and materials science," said Joost Dubois, DSM's branding and communication director.
