The financial planning industry has been debating whether retirees can withdraw 4% of their initial assets each year in retirement, as many assumed in the past. The 4% rate is still a workable guideline, writes John Rekenthaler of Morningstar, if investors are willing to adapt to changing economic conditions, accept a lower success rate and choose a shorter time horizon.
