A Web-based company whose hardware system was rapidly falling behind was faced with a tough choice between making patchwork improvements or larger changes that would ensure longer-term viability while causing short-term disruptions. Ultimately, Clint Smith, co-founder of marketing and communications company Emma, decided to make large-scale changes. "We couldn't design for the future, but we could design something that could adapt to what the future will bring," Smith said.
