An op-ed written by columnist Jerry Shenk contained several misleading statements about ethanol, writes Bob Dinneen, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association. Contrary to Shenk's claims, federal data show that ethanol has reduced demand for imported oil and lessened carbon emissions by 40% to 50% compared with regular gasoline, Dinneen states. The ethanol industry accounts for more than 87,000 jobs and indirectly supports an additional 295,000 jobs, while contributing $7.9 billion in taxes, Dinneen notes.
