The SPARK Institute wrote to the U.S. Labor and Treasury departments, asking that they issue regulations authorizing defined-contribution plans to determine a couple's marital status based on the place where the marriage ceremony was performed as opposed to where the married couple resides. The requests are a response to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that deemed part of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional; the institute says that ruling left some important questions unanswered.
