Retailers and product manufacturers are among the industries turning to next-generation QR codes to facilitate mobile shopping and remote transactions, but experts warn that for hackers, the feature has become a new backdoor into user devices. According to Dave Chronister of Parameter Security, cybercriminals have access to free tools that let them create malicious QR codes, which send users to a Web link that embeds a JavaScript trojan onto their device, giving hackers ongoing access to personal data.
