A study in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine found FDG-PET could be effective in the staging and management of merkel cell carcinoma. Researchers at the University of Melbourne analyzed data from patients who underwent FDG-PET scans using PET or PET/CT imaging. They recorded patients' management plans before and after the imaging procedures and retrospectively recorded the follow-up outcomes. Tumor staging scans with FDG-PET led to a treatment change in 37% of patients. Among 23 scans considered to have a substantial impact, 62% led to a change in treatment modality, 21% influenced treatment intent and 17% led to changes in treatment modality plus the technique for radiation therapy.
